State Secretary for Global Affairs Doru Costea and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi, held a first round of political consultations in Bucharest on 25 October 2010, organized at the level of the two states’ ministries of Foreign Affairs.

During their talks, the two officials tackled issues of interest for both sides, such as a wider political dialogue, cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the importance of developing a bilateral legal framework to provide the instruments required for intensifying sectoral cooperation, in particular in the economic and commercial areas. They agreed on the finalization and signing as soon as possible of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and on establishing contacts between the two countries’ Chambers of Commerce and SMEs organizations.

The two officials further examined the relationship between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council and developments in several regional dossiers, like Iraq, Iran, the Middle East Peace Process, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Sudan. They also discussed cooperation within international institutions, energy security and the effects of the global financial crisis.

At the end of the first round of political consultations, the two officials signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman.
